"Humiliating Day"
According to the Vancouver Sun (link), a critic called the release of Obama's birth certificate a "humiliating day" since it was caused by the ignorant "suspicions" of people such as Donald Trump. Because Trump made a statement about Obama needing to release his birth certificate to the public to end the suspicions of people who think he might be Muslim...(um, I think the U.S. gov would have figured that out by now if it was true), Obama went ahead and did it. And this is humiliating for our nation because it shows the continued existence of racism in 2011. Do you think we as a nation ever demanded to see a Caucasian president's birth certificate? No. It upsets me that things haven't really changed for the better. And I hope I'm not the only one upset by it.

Hayley- Great point; this is the first time (to my knowledge, at least) that any president has been asked to prove their citizenship AFTER they're already president! It seems rediculous! However, I don't think this is a racism issue as much as it is a religious prejudice one. As you said, people inquired about Obama being Muslim, probably because of his middle name "Hussein." What many fail to realize, because of their ignorance and bigotry, is that Muslim people are not all bad people. Even the fact that people thought that since he is Muslim means he is not American is so beyond belief- not all Jewish people are Israeli, for example, and not all Muslim people are from the Middle East. Thanks for putting this out there, it is most certainly humiliating.
ReplyDeleteI dont think people "demanded to see a caucasian president's birth certificate". I think the war on terror and 9/11 caused American's to connect terrorism to muslims. From this we see racial profiling in airports and an uncomfortable feeling towards religion. Even though one's religion should be meaningless in America, people fear having an Islamic president.
